a pet shop after dark is a horror point-and-click adventure game where you've taken on an odd job at a little pet shop. The owner tells you the job is easy - all you have to do is water the plants, feed the pets, and stay the night.

The first game in the series was developed by Infogrames and released for PC in 1992. It was one of the first two games to use polygonal characters over pre-rendered backgrounds. Guinness World Records awarded it the record of "First Ever 3D Survival Horror Game" in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008 edition. Krisalis Software made a port for the 3DO in 1994 that was released by Interplay Entertainment. A Mac version was released in 1994. In 2014, Atari published a port to iOS developed by Kung Fu Factory but was pulled out of the App Store after the latest iOS updates.

A small game made during the second game's production, Jack in the Dark, was used as a promotional game distributed during Christmas of 1993, just before the second installment's release. The game was on a single floppy disk in a golden wrapping featuring a Jack-in-the-box illustration on the top. It is a short adventure featuring the young child Grace Saunders. During Halloween, she enters a small toy store after dark and gets locked inside. There, the toys are alive, and Grace must save Santa Claus from an evil Jack-in-the-box. Jack in the Dark is an adventure game that focuses purely on puzzles and has no combat. Later CD versions of both Alone in the Dark and Alone in the Dark 2 came packaged with this game.

The three original games take place in the 1920s and depict the paranormal cases of private eye Edward Carnby. In 1924 (Alone in the Dark) he is commissioned by an antique dealer to investigate a piano in the loft of the Louisiana mansion Derceto, which was abandoned after its owner Jeremy Hartwood committed suicide. On Christmas Eve 1924 (Alone in the Dark 2) Carnby goes on to solve a case involving the kidnapping of young Grace Saunders after the investigating procedures of his deceased partner Ted Stryker, with all the clues leading to an old California mansion named "Hell's Kitchen"[28] and an infamous gangster who inhabited it. In 1925 (Alone in the Dark 3) he is called to investigate the disappearance of a film crew at a two-bit ghost town known by the name of Slaughter Gulch located in the Mojave Desert in California. The first game shares the protagonist role with Jeremy Hartwood's niece, Emily Hartwood, who also takes a role of damsel-in-distress in Alone in the Dark 3.

Really good foundation for a game, and the artwork is nice. Love the concept, and would like to see it expanded on beyond what I feel are the basic princesses. It has a little bit of the "everyone needs a big chest to be attractive" vibe to it, like a lot of these games. A little variety wouldn't hurt it in that department imo. It feels like after two years of development it would have a smoother flow to the base game. There is a lot of repetition in drawing/upgrading things that just amounts to click on the dwarf cave, choose upgrade, go back to your office cycle through 2-5 days, rinse repeat dozens of times. That's not fun, like at all. Sure, you can do other stuff and not rush through it, but honestly there isn't enough content there to fill all of that time day wise, being only able to do one thing per day or night per princess. Why not overcome some of the tedium there with a simple "upgrade all" button, and then just let them upgrade in order over time or whatever. There would still be a lot of cycling through the days just to get it done, but it would take out some of the annoyance of having to click back and forth through the map/menus. Another issue I ran into was the park rating going down to zero and being unable to date the girls. Just something that says "do this to unlock the schedule to bring rating back up" would help. It seems like a weird thing to keep out of reach from players until they jump through all the hoops of unlocking the schedule tab on their own, not even being told it exists. The park rating mechanic as a whole seems pointless outside preventing dates. If it effects money, I didn't notice, but with it being as hard as it is to raise again, I'm glad it doesn't. All that aside though, it's a unique experience and I look forward to future updates!

Inspired by some of the great RPG Maker horror games of yesteryear, Ann is arguably one of the most well-presented free-to-play passion projects on Steam. It looks and sounds fantastic and blends together high-quality animation and traditional 2D sprite-based gameplay to surprisingly good effect.

The goal of BABBDI is a simple one, with players just needing to find a way to escape, yet this is far from a simple game. Yes, there's no combat in the traditional sense, but then nor are there many limitations when it comes to exploration. Everything just comes together perfectly, making this not only one of the best free horror games on Steam but one of the best free Steam games period.

One of the most popular horror games of all time thanks to its unique combination of Silent Hill and Half-Life, Cry of Fear is objectively one of the better free-to-play games around. The game boasts a triple-A adjacent experience, with an 8-hour campaign and multiple ending scenarios, on top of a co-op experience and diverse modding community that satisfies anyone left wanting more.

Described by its creators as "a 3D narrative experience in madness," Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft is one of the most immersive free-to-play horror games on Steam. At least it is when played in VR mode, anyway: a feature that most indie devs could only dream of implementing in their titles, especially those that are being given away for free.

There's still no word on when exactly the full release of Dark Fracture will see the light of day, but, if Dark Fracture: Prologue is anything to go by, it looks set to be one of the better free-to-play first-person horror games on steam. The visuals and audio combine to provide a delightfully disturbing atmosphere, while the thought-provoking puzzles contribute just the right amount of challenge.

According to its creator, Deathly Stillness was never intended to be an officially released game. It was thrown together in just 17 days and is meant to serve as a tutorial of sorts for other game creators. Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator is one of two free FNaF games on Steam and is well worth the price of admission or lack thereof. The title is a business simulation gaming with players put in charge of their own pizza restaurant and continues the story of Michael Afton, who also appears in FNaF 3 and Sister Location. There's plenty of lore for fans of the series, but the gameplay alone should be enough to satisfy those who are new to the franchise.

It may not be an out-and-out scare-fest like some of the other great free horror games on Steam, but My Sticker Book still packs in a decent amount of psychological horror elements into what ends up being a relatively small and short package.
